About the Company
Founded in January 2020, Carbonwave (previously C-Combinator) is a developer of ultra-regenerative, plant-based, advanced biomaterials from seaweed. The company transforms Sargassum seaweed, a resource long considered waste and that doesn’t need land or other typical aids to grow, into biomaterials that replace derivatives from oil and other harmful industry inputs. Carbonwave is part of a new wave of companies that are building the next-generation economies that will heal the planet through materials that are regeneratively sourced from our oceans.
Material
Carbonwave is developing a seaweed-based non-woven textile out of up-cycled Sargassum. They believe in the power of seaweed and are using the valuable alginates and protein polymer complexes within the seaweed to create the structure of their textile. Given the abundance of sargassum, they also believe their capacity will be highly-scalable. Their product is currently 99% plastic-free and working towards 100% plastic-free.
Technology
The company uses a proprietary extraction process to extract valuable components of the seaweed which form the basis of the top surface film. These components aren't mere filler - they are a core of the structure. Then, they add natural plant-based ingredients to stabilize the mixture and to produce a more consistent finish. The mix is poured over a linen textile (which provides tear resistance), baked, and treated for finish.
