AMSilk presented Biosteel® fiber in 2013. Biosteel is spider silk produced via precision fermentation.
Production process: Precision fermentation
Biosteel® fiber is made via precision fermentation. The gene that codes for spider silk protein is first inserted into bacteria. The engineered bacteria are placed in large bioreactor tanks with the necessary growth medium. The proteins produced by the bacteria are harvested and processed into fibers.
Biosteel® fibers are produced with renewable resources and are 100% biodegradable. According to recent information from the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s Higg index, silk produced using silkworms is the worst fabric for the environment. It is very likely that Biosteel fibers are considerably more sustainable than silkworm silk fibers in most - if not all - measures. Using precision fermentation to produce spider silk is certainly better in terms of animal welfare.
Like spider silk produced by spiders, Biosteel fibers are light, strong, and elastic. These fibers are optimized for durability, moisture management, and odor control. In addition, Biosteel fibers can be tailored to the product application.
