Terms of Employment: Unpaid intern 

Reports to: Executive Director

Position Location: Remote



The Material Innovation Initiative (MII) fast tracks innovation in next-gen materials for the fashion, automotive, and home goods industries with a focus on replacing animal-based materials. MII seeks 10 fall interns motivated to make a difference for animals and the environment for fall 2020. The program lasts 12 weeks from September 1 through November 20th with some flexibility depending on university schedule. Interns are expected to work between 15-40 hours a week depending on university requirements. 


This internship is an opportunity to learn about the material industry and the latest in  animal-free and sustainable innovations and gain research, writing, and presentation experience. Each intern will work on one in-depth report which they will be expected to finish during the internship. Upon completion of this unpaid internship, the intern will receive a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation. If your college/university awards credit for internships, we will work with you to obtain it.


Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Draft one of the following reports: 

    • Market report on down

    • Market report on fur

    • Market report on exotic skins

    • Technology report on next gen down

    • Technology report next gen silk

    • Technology report on next gen wool

    • Sustainability report on wool and sustainability report on next gen wool

    • Sustainability report on down and sustainability report on next gen down

    • Material performance report (material testing) on wool 

    • Material performance report (material testing) on down

  • Participate in interviews of material innovators and draft innovator reports

  • Write 2-3 blog posts on their work during the internship

  • Potential to provide support to MII’s social media efforts

  • Other duties may be assigned as time and interest permit


Position Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student with interests in animal welfare and environmental issues, especially pertaining to materials in the fashion industry 

  • Preference given to students studying material science and/or engineering and students studying sustainability

  • Excellent written communication skills

  • Ability to work independently on a distributed team using google drive

  • Ability to take direction, but also to find solutions independently

  • Commitment to the objectives of the Material Innovation Initiative



  • Participate fully in team meetings with professionals

  • Direct interaction with the executive director

  • Participate in meetings with industry professionals as part of our “Meet the Expert” speaker series

  • Set your own hours and work from home

  • Choose some projects based on your interests
