Verónica Bergottini received her university degree in Genetics, majoring in Agricultural Microbiology, and studied Artistic Design as a hobby. She combined these skills and interests after discovering the promise of using biotechnology for fashion materials. She began her journey as an entrepreneur by making prototypes from her home to explore material synthesized by microorganisms. She founded Karu Biodiseño Consciente to produce a leather alternative called TILEX with applications in fashion, home decor, and art. In 2019, she was chosen as a PROESUS 2020 Ambassador (Argentina’s sustainable future program).
TILEX is a fabric synthesized by microorganisms grown on Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), a type of holly plant native to South America. Its texture can be made similar to leather or paper. Uncoated, it is biodegradable and compostable.
