About the Company
MycoFutures North Atlantic was created after the founders pivoted from developing a gourmet mushroom farm to next-gen materials using mycelium, the root system of fungi. The company is driven by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Number 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
Material
MycoFutures uses mycelium as a foundation of their next-gen leather, adapting mushroom cultivation techniques (solid state fermentation) and vertical farming, combined with novel tanning methods, thus creating an innovative material that takes only weeks to grow without the use of animal products or plastics. The size of the material can be customized to the end use, which reduces the amount of offcut waste, and the substrate and off-cuts are compostable.
Technology
MycoFutures is at the R&D stage, developing its processes both in-house and with research partners. The company selects a desired strain and grows it in a Petri dish. The mycelium that begins to propagate is then transferred into a growth medium, using a vertical farming method that can be easily scaled. The mycelium is cultivated until it reaches the desired density. It is then processed to stop its growth and stabilized.
