About the Company

Bolt Threads was founded in 2009 with the idea of developing better materials for a better world. They brought spider silk fibers to market in 2012 and expanded to a 32,000 sq ft facility in 2015. Bolt Threads launched the Microsilk tie and collaborated with Stella McCartney in 2017. They worked again with Stella McCartney on their Adidas Microsilk collaboration.

Material

Microsilk™ is microbe-derived and is dentical to the silk protein made by spiders.

Technology

The DNA that codes for spider silk protein is first inserted into microbes. The engineered microbes are placed in bioreactor tanks with the necessary growth medium. The proteins produced by the microbes are harvested and processed into fibers.

Applications

Fashion, footwear
